Senior Open Championship
This week is the Senior Open at Sunningdale featuring some of the Legends of the game and I was dearly hoping to be there, but despite hitting the ball as well as I can around Camberley Heath, my score added up to 4 over par with possibly the worst putting display I have ever given!!!
My great friend Ivan Norman who was my assistant in the early 1980's was caddying and as he is a member at Sunningdale, so it was even more disappointing that I performed so poorly on the greens.
I was partnered with Manuel Pinero; the ex Ryder Cup player who was a pleasure to play with.
So it's back to the drawing board to build some confidence, but I suppose with my lack of competitive play recently I shouldn't complain.
I will still look forward to watching the Senior Open from such a magnificent venue as Sunningdale and watching many of the all time greats of the game.
Many Thanks,
Peter
Junior Victory Trophy Shootout - John's Report
With Peter being away trying to qualify for the Senior Open, I played against the juniors on Tuesday night and really enjoyed it.
The team for this year is as follows: Ben Johnson (Junior Captain), Connor Winstanley, Mike Rimmer, Matthew Holland, Nathan McAleavey, Joe Finch, Matthew Picton, Kian Price, Adam Leivesley and Ben Winstanley. Unfortunately Adam, Kian and Ben Winstanley couldn't make it on the night. With only 8 players taking part, the first two holes were practice holes then on holes 3-9 one player with the worst gross score is knocked out each hole leaving a winner after 9.
Matthew Picton had the highest handicap out of the group, yet made a great 6 on the 3rd followed by a 4 on the 4th knocking out two players off much lower handicaps! Junior Captain Ben started really well on the first few holes but made a double bogey on 6 leaving myself, Joe, Mike and Connor who was eliminated on 7 after making bogey.
On we went to the 8th hole and Mike and Joe both made bogey, I made par leaving them in a chip off. Paul Featherstone picked a tough spot from behind the green and Mike hit a superb shot to about 4 feet to join me up the ninth.
Mike pulled his tee shot but made a great par save on nine to leave us in a chip off after I missed for birdie; in last year's event Mike beat Peter in a chip off on 9 and hit a great shot to 5 feet. Thankfully I hit a perfect chip and won the shootout; I had a great time and was delighted to win as I know Mike would never let me forget that if he beat me!
I would like to say thanks to the organisers who work tirelessly to help the juniors, and also to the Lady Captain Kath Smith who came out supporting on the night.
Many thanks,
John
