The Open
Today sees the start of the Open at St Andrews and I am sure it will be an exciting few days.
I have enjoyed watching the Open ever since I started playing and hearing the famous theme tune as it comes on is great.
It also brings back great memories for me having played in 2 Open Championships, and had the privilege of the famous starter Ivor Robson announcing in his famous tone
"On the Tee, representing England, Peter Allan"
I have my 2 special players badges in pride of place at home which are from Turnberry in 1986 where my wife Donna caddied (which was eventful), and also Birkdale in 1991 where my good friend Jimmy Fisher was on the bag, and I played all 4 rounds and was in contention for a couple of rounds playing with eventual winner Ian Baker Finch in the 3rd round.
I hope you enjoy watching, and if you have had a go in our Open sweep you may have ended up with one of the favourites!
Talking of which, it's a great shame that Rory won't be there, but I am sure there will be some fantastic golf and also some surprises.
Enjoy the Week!
Lady Captain
It's been a busy time for our Lady Captain Kath Smith and she has been in need of a drink!! I caught her last week finishing off a small glass in the car park!!!
Another Busy Week here at Ashton
Last week was a busy week with the Jack Potter Trophy on Sunday, the Pro Am on Tuesday and the Breast Cancer Charity day on Friday.
Jack Potter Day
There was a great turn out again for the Jack Potter Day and a big thanks to Andy Best and Graham Hurst for their generous support.
Pro Am
The Pro Am was a great success despite some very heavy rain at times, but the course was great and Richard Iredale's team of Richard, Mark and Craig Rimmer along with Professional David Shacklady won the team event with a great score of 125.
The leading Professionals tying 1st on 68 were Graham Cox and Steve Parry.
Yours truly didn't shape up too well and limped home in 74 shots after being level par through 13 holes, bogey train!!!
Breast Cancer Charity Day
Finally the Breast Cancer day organised by Steve Rimmer and Dave Cahill was a huge success raising over £4000 for the charity and a great day was had by all with fabulous weather and a great Disco and buffet in the evening.
The winning team on the day was Allan Pilling, Harvey Roberts, Gavin Eagleton and Dave Jones with a fantastic score of 91 points, and remarkably they only scored 1 point on their 1st hole!!!!
I would like to thank my team on the day Jeff Ratcliffe, Stef Lucas and Ady Price who were flying along nicely but faltered over the last few holes finishing with 82 points.
As I say a very busy week and a huge thank you to our wonderful team of people who work tirelessly to ensure the success of these events, there are a lot of you who put in a lot of effort and so that I don't upset anyone by missing them out, you all know who you are and a MASSIVE THANKS!
Adrian Price was looking on course for a nett score in the 50's on Saturday as he was 5 over gross after 15 holes (19 handicap) but struggled on the last few holes to finish with a nett 64! To show the ups and downs of golf, Adie was talking about packing in last week...magnificent turnaround by Adie!
Congratulations to Ian and Andrew for their fantastic scores at the weekend. Their great scores are proof that custom fitting benefits everyone! Ian has played at Ashton for many years and has played in the Victory Trophy many times, whereas Andy has only been a member a couple of years and is constantly improving having now lowered his handicap to 21.8. Both have come in recently looking to upgrade their current set of irons and have already seen the benefits.
