Last week 3 of my regular lessons could have won competitions but made schoolboy errors which hopefully they will learn from and not repeat again when they get in the same position.
Golfer No1 - Playing the last hole layed up off the tee with a 7 iron in his new set, which he is hitting much further than his old one, and hit it too far and blocked himself out so did not score on the hole.
The key is to always focus on your lay up and not be too casual about it.
Golfer No2 - Also playing the last hole missed a tap in from 4 inches by being too casual. There are no gimmies in golf so if it counts as one shot make sure you pay proper attention to it, don't lean over someone's line to tap in!
Unless you would bet your house on knocking it in with one hand, then mark it and treat it with respect.
Golfer No3 - Playing the 5th hole got in the bunker which was compacted and having recently had a bunker lesson and been playing them very well, approached the ball lying on quite hard sand in the same way you would play a standard bunker shot with a cushion of sand beneath it, and failed to get out after several attempts, and not scoring on the hole.
The problem here is that the technique is very different from a normal bunker shot and the clubface needs to be closed. You also need to hit steeply down into the sand with hardly any follow through, as by playing the shot in the normal way, the club will bounce off the hard surface into the ball and more than likely skull it into the face of the bunker.
It is very important to assess the lie before you play a bunker shot.
It's all about technique and getting a feel for the sand as you actually never want to hit the ball, only sand so you need to get a good feel for it.

Using the bounce
Here are a couple of Pictures of our Lady Captain during a recent short game lesson.
The terminology of Bounce I know is confusing to many golfers, but it is basically the sole of the club which, if you use it correctly, can vastly improve your short game.
In the 2 pictures you will see Kath with her old set up with hands well forward and New set up (hopefully) with hands much less so.
This may seem awkward at first as many people believe in putting their hands way forward, but it actually takes a lot more skill to play shots successfully like this.
By leaning the shaft forward you are taking away the bounce of the club and bringing the leading edge too much in to play which acts like a knife edge digging into the turf and often causing very poor shots.
Please feel free to call in and ask any questions if you are unsure about bounce or click here to get in touch!!!
