Senior Open Championship
This week is the Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl and sadly you won't be watching myself or Garry as we both missed out on qualifying on Monday.
I was playing at Ashburnham and Garry at Southerndown and had both travelled down last Saturday for a couple of practice rounds, and I played pretty well in practice and I know Garry who has been in great form recently also played very well.
It was a similar tale for both of us in the event as we both finished our rounds poorly after being in with a realistic chance with a few holes to play.
I had played solidly in typical windy links conditions and was 1 over par with just 3 holes to play, but a run of bogey, double bogey and par meant I missed qualifying by 2 shots.
As Garry will confirm this makes the 5 hour drive home very sad!!
Having played in the Open Championship on 2 occasions, so far the Senior Open has eluded me and I have missed out by a couple of shots on 3 occasions, but hopefully next year will be kinder to both Garry and myself as it would be a fantastic achievement for us both to play and represent Ashton.
Junior Victory Trophy
On Tuesday we held our annual Junior Trophy shoot out where I play alongside the team in a sudden death type format.
The lads played some great golf, and by the time we got round to the 8th tee there was just me, Michael Rimmer and Nathan Mcleavy left standing.
Nathan dropped out which left Michael and me on the 9th, it's a tough school as up till that point I had made 5 pars and 3 birdies! Michael hit a great drive and a fantastic approach shot to 10 feet, and I also hit a good drive and hit my second to 5ft so the tension mounts, of course as I knew he would Michael rolled his in for a birdie which left me to hole from 5 feet to tie.
Paul Featherstone then decided on a play off and we had a difficult chip from the banking on the side of the green which I played reasonably well, but Michael played a great shot to about a foot to win the shoot out in great style.
Congratulations to all our Team on Qualifying and best of luck on the Day at Wigan Golf Club on Friday 1st August.
