There's life in the old dog yet
Last week's Lancashire Amateur (the county's flagship event) was played at Ormskirk Golf Club, with around 120 of the best golfers in Lancashire competing.
Our very own Garry Lacy who is a past winner made a great start with a round of 69 which could easily have been much better. The field was cut to just 40 players for the final day's play which was going to be over 36 holes. Garry added a disappointing 76 to his opening round and easily made the cut in 21st place.
36 holes on the final Sunday and Garry shot 74 in the morning which moved him up the field, and a solid 71 in the afternoon saw him finish in 13th place with nothing much more than kids ahead of him!
A great performance even though I know he is a little disappointed, but he hasn't competed in the event for several years and should be proud of his performance.
Next stop, Senior British Open Qualifying for this year's Carnoustie Open and both Garry and myself will be trying to Qualify.
Mens Invitation
Last week's Mens Invitation day was won by Alec Power and his guest with 43 points winning £80 voucher each, 2nd Place was Garry Barker and guest and in 3rd place Matt Gallagher and guest both with 42 points and winning £60 and £40.
Nearest the pins were won by Jim McEwan and Kris Meadows and there were a dozen Titleist solo balls for a Two.
This year's event was down on entries which was a shame but still a great day where a member can bring a friend or relative and show case our Club.
We usually hold 2 of these events per year which in America are called Member-Guest Tournaments.
With an entry fee of just £15 per couple which includes a two's sweep and prizes up to the value of around £600, these days are great value and an opportunity to show your friends what a great course and club we have here at Ashton.
The next Invitation is on Sunday, 31 July, keep your eye on the notice board in early July for the next entry sheet and let's make it a sell out.
