The Best Swinger in the Club
Ashton In Makerfield Golf Club member, Gary Hankinson, has just been made a Srixon and Cleveland Golf Swingers ambassador as part of Virgin Atlantic's Golf programme.
This prestigious honour will see Gary represent the golfing brands and airline across the summer as he plays in club competitions and events throughout the UK. Gary is one of only 6 golfers who will receive this honour in 2016, and what's more he is now competing to be chosen as Ambassador of the Year which will see one lucky person become a member of the Srixon and Cleveland Golf team as they prepare for the 2017 season at the Orlando Golf Show in January.
Gary will now carry a personalised tour bag (as per the image) and also receives a year's supply of golf balls and other items.
The ambassador competition is just part of Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club Swingers programme which sees 7,000 golfers around the globe compete to represent either Europe or Rest of the World in a Ryder Cup style final at the end of the season. This year's final will take place at Sun City in South Africa, and Gary is well placed to be competing in that event.
Well done Mick
Congratulations to Mick Kenny on organising a fund raising golf day here at Ashton last Friday which raised around £3000 to help send a young boy suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy on a specialist Holiday with his family.
The 4 man team event was well supported and followed by a Disco and a curry night and fund raising Auction.
Mick and Steve Rimmer were the MC's for the evening, and a great time was had by all as well as a lot of money being raised to help a very worthy cause. Richie as always helped with the organisation, and a massive thanks go to all who helped and supported the event.
Senior Club Professional's Championship
I have been playing myself this week in our National Senior Club Pro's Championship which saw a field of over 200 competing for the Trophy at the magnificent Foxhills golf club in Surrrey.
The event was over 54 holes with a cut to the top 50 after 2 rounds, which was meant to be 18 holes on wednesday and 18 on Thursday but due to torrential rain and flooding (see photos) the 1st day was abandoned and we had to play 36 holes on Thursday and luckily I made the cut despite a double bogey on my 36th hole of the day. I then played quite nicely in tough conditions in the final round and moved up into 21st place so just about covered my expenses ! Not bad considering how little I have been competing recently.
Incredible Scoring In The Seniors Section
This weeks Senior Stableford was won by Alan Curties (Spanish Al) with an incredible 48 points which was a magnificent 71 Gross, nett 58! This was good enough to win by 7 shots with Tommy Bradshaw and Dave Hignett both scoring 41 points. Alan was playing with Alan Roberts (aka The Sheriff) who himself had 37 points and was eclipsed by a mere 11 shots! Tough school if you ask me.
